Los Retros releases first track on New Label Stones Throw Records!
Solo artist, Los Retros, has dropped his first single with his new record label, Stones Throw Records.
The 21-year-old, whose real name is Mauri Tapia, was already well known before signing his deal with his new label, (who have worked with the likes of MF Doom and J Dilla) after he developed an early fanbase during his teenage years, having particular success with ‘Someone To Spend Time With.
The new single, titled ‘It’s got to be you’, showcases the singer’s gifts as both a songwriter and vocalist and brings breezy, soulful and psychedelic instrumentation that sounds effortless in its minimalist production. There are echoes of Tom Misch and Lianne La Havas while the vocal performance is reminiscent of Stevie Wonder.
In addition to dropping the single, Los Retros also announced a new EP, titled ‘Looking Back’, that is due to land in the spring and promises to draw on Tapia’s vast range of influences, including American soft-rock, left-field South American pop, and 90s hip-hop.
The new EP will be his first EP of 2021 and follows 2020’s ‘Everlasting’ which presented a more intimate and vulnerable side to the singer and was, musically speaking, heavily inspired by funk and jazz.
If his new single is a taste of what is to come, the forthcoming EP will be fantastic.
