Cross Wires drop in and answer the 10 Quesstions ahead of their latest release
Where did the band name come from?
It’s not very exciting. We are named after a song on XTC’s first album ‘White Music’ called ‘Cross Wires’ We did say in an interview once we chose the name because our guitarist Pete really hated the song ‘Wires’ by ‘Athlete’ and used to get really angry whenever he heard it. Maybe we should just stick with that.
Where is your hometown, and give us a reason/fact why we should visit it?
I live in Bethnal Green and have done for a long time but I grew up in Romford and Pete (guitar) and Ian (drums) both still live there. If you visit Romford you should visit the pub Then Golden Lion’ because I suppose that’s where we had the idea to start the band. You should visit Bethnal Green because it’s just a wonderfully crazy place to live. There’s always some sort of bizarre madness happening on Bethnal Green Road that still makes me smile.
What encouraged you to want to get into music?
I can’t speak for the other guys but for me Blur were definitely the reason I wanted to be in a band. You’ll never love anything as much as that first band you get in to. They completely changed my life.
Best venue you’ve ever played and why?
I really love The Victoria in Dalston. We’ve played there a few times and I’ve loved it every time. There’s always a great atmosphere in that venue and the sound on stage is always amazing. We recently did a live stream gig at a venue in Chelmsford, Essex called ‘Hot Box’ it’s a fantastic place run by people who are so passionate about live music. They really looked after us and it was a joy to play there even with nobody in the venue. We are hoping to go back and play properly in spring.
One band/artist you’d love to support?
The Clash but that’s obviously not possible. I’d say of the current crop of new bands ‘Idles’ because I’ve seen them live a few times now and they are such a superb live band and the atmosphere at their gigs is so positive. I think that would be fun.
What’s the greatest love song ever written?
I definitely tend to lean towards the more bleak love song so I’ll say ‘Love Will Tear Us Apart’ by Joy Division as it’s one of the most perfect songs ever written and I’ll never get tired of hearing it even though I’ve heard it a million times or ‘No Distance Left to Run’ by Blur. One of the most honest and heartbreaking songs of all time.
The best album that you’ve heard this year?
‘Ultimate Success Today’ by Protomartyr. I love everything they’ve ever put out and they just keep getting better and better.
Most underrated band/artist of all time?
Magazine. Those first 3 albums are ridiculously good. Everyone should own them.
Which three artists/bands should we be looking out for? (Musically, not for Criminal Offences)
Bugeye – They are a sort of punk tinged disco and they write brilliant catchy dance floor fillers. They are also such amazing supporters of other new bands. Check out their podcast ‘Rock Pop Ramblings’
The Iron Duke – It’s the new project from Tommy Mack who was the singer in a band called ‘White Ape’ who we played with a few times. Check out their track ‘Courtney Love Will Tear Us Apart’ If someone like ‘Idles’ had have put that out it would have been massive. He just put out his first single under the ‘Iron Duke’ name. Sort of a Lo-Fi Berlin Bowie.
Benefits – Another new project this time from Kingsley Chapman who was the singer in ‘The Chapman Family’ Everything they’ve put out so far is really great. Brilliantly noisy, Political and clever.
What do you want to accomplish next as a band?
We will be continuing writing and recording songs in a day at our rehearsal space ‘The Control Rooms’ and putting them out quickly alongside writing album 2. The songs we write and record in rehearsal will form an EP that will be out in the first part of next year. Hopefully we get to play gigs again next year. We have a couple of festivals already confirmed which should be announced fairly soon.
Bonus Question – Favourite vegetable and why!?
Asparagus. The most underrated vegetable of all time. The Magazine of the vegetable world
