Faux Pas release New Single ‘That’s My Ego’
‘That’s My Ego’ is the latest single from grunge rockers Faux Pas, which has been specially released via Leeds-based record label Come Play With Me as a split 7” vinyl alongside Uncle Buzzard’s psychedelically jazzy ‘Big Cat’. It follows Faux Pas’ performances at an array of festivals this summer including Reading and Leeds, as well as some well-deserved Radio 1 airplay to add to their musical CV.
This release is not only musically exciting but is also part of Come Play With Me’s not-for-profit movement in promoting upcoming releases from local talent through the creation of original split singles. The band’s vocalist and guitarist Ru states that ‘That’s My Ego’ is about ‘taking control of who you are and addressing the struggle of those who feel they cannot’. This is an important message for people in this day and age who may be frustrated by their lack of control, and for those who may want to sedate themselves through self-medication with drugs and alcohol.
Musically, ‘That’s My Ego’ channels these frustrations and begins with lead singer Ru’s vocals, reminiscent of Weezer, alongside lyrics such as ‘I’m alone inside my head’ and ‘I can’t break the noise’ found in the snarling, moody verses. Steady drums drive each verse closer towards the pulsing bass, which is met with scratchy and menacing vocals before exploding into a destructive chorus.
The rage and power that this track conveys are brought to a halt with fading, fuzzy guitars, resulting in a pleasing yet disturbed track. This single truly builds to encapsulate a tale of defiance and self-control with sounds reminiscent of Placebo, Hole and Queen Zee, whilst demonstrating a perfect mix of light and shade through its musical rawness paired with angsty, honest lyrics.
Overall, this track is the band’s most exciting and strongest release to date, with Ru explaining how the band has shifted away from previous themes of anger and hatred, towards a new stance which is “more about promoting the feeling of community”.
